Why is it so hard to buy *practical* women’s clothing?
Just three examples from recent purchases:
1) I wanted to buy some hiking boots, something I could actually *use* on mountains and the like. Ended up buying a small mans’ size because the ladies’ range was nowhere near heavy-duty enough.
2) Ladies’ weather-resistant fleece jackets wouldn’t reach the bottom of my back, so in actuality would have offered next to no protection against the elements. Again, bought a small mans’ size.
3) Very similar to 2), only this time it was a rain-jacket the failed to be long enough to actually keep you dry.
Why is it so hard to buy *practical* women’s clothing? I’m sure I’m not the only one who doesn’t just want to look pretty indoors…
Ah, I would do online, except I’m awkward sizes. I fit between two, so I’m never really sure which way I’m going to go.
I’m a student whose preparing to spend getting on for £100 on a raincoat. I don’t think unwillingness to spend money is the problem.

Buy online. Clothing stores are useless today. All they carry is cheap, impractical little outfits intended to make the wearer look like a reality television star. And clothing retailers wonder why their sales are down.
I’ve been looking for a dress for a friend’s wedding. Everything is sleeveless. She’s getting married outside. In New England. In late October. Yeah, sleeveless will work.

i think this issue is aimed more towards your awkward sizes as you state in your additional details.
i’m petite yet i have seen plenty of nice hiking boats that hold the test of time and that are comfy. ask you hike i backpack and hike also with the rain gear.
tho it does depend where you shop. your not going to find "standard" stuff at some department store. for good stuff that you have mentioned try out door shops or something.

I hear you. I have a terrible time finding comfortable, "working" long skirts for my job as an at-home mom. I know we are looking for different types of clothing, but I, too, want to find sturdy, practical clothing that is not designed to entice men. I want to look nice, but more than that, I want my clothing to not slow me down.

Hey its even worse for a guy when you are looking to find a nice cocktail dress. You end up having to go to the women’s section and there is always at least one gal who has to giggle the whole time you are getting the sales ladies opinion on how you look, Or thinks chiffon is now out of style and wants to let you know!

I used to work for a company in Canada called Mountain Equiptment Co-op. I know that MEC, North Face, Columbia, Merrell, Arcteryx, Taiga, and many others make high quality outdoor womens gear from; fleece, nylon, gore-tex, canvas, wool, cotton and other materials. Perhaps the problem is that you’re not willing to spend what it takes to get something that is; well cut, well made and will fit as per your requirements? Finding outdoors clothing can be cheap. Finding outdoors clothing made from high quality materials, that fit properly and are stylish at the same time costs money. Pony up!

Women’s clothing is made more for style and fashion. Men’s clothes are made for some style/fashion but also significant function.
If you were in the U.S., I’d say try an Eddie Bauer.

Same reason it’s so hard for me to buy dragon skin boots. Practical women’s clothing is a myth.
My sister bleeds into her shoes because they were designed "by sadists". Every winter this state gets large amounts of snow and ice. What do the women wear? Fashion jackets, beanies, decorative scarves, and frostbite. I’ve heard so many complaints about women’s winter boots (which have thin soles, with NO TREAD, are NOT Waterproof, and are made of barely insulated foux fur! (When I heard women were removing toes for their shoes, I thought they meant they were going for surgery so they could fit into those wacky pointed iron boots, they call fashion pumps.)
Drelrock: What about the women who don’t have hundreds to pay for the clothes they need to go "outdoors" (as in from their home to their school/ work/ grocery store/ etc.?) They can’t exactly "pony up", unless they’re willing to stop feeding their families for a few months. (sadly, that’s exactly what some of them do. – They can’t stop going to work, their families would still go hungry!)
