Part 5 Backpacking Boots by Nutnfancy
In this series I cover key features of backpacking boot construction to help you in your purchase decision. I may have left some things out but I cover the important parts. I don’t review specific boots and probably won’t ever: models change frequently and it’s just logistically impossible for me now. Using the info I provide here just give a good basis for getting the right heavy duty hiking boot.

Great vid, thanks. What about combat boots? I love mine – old style full leather 6+ years, good for days on end and on their second retread (Vibrams). The newer GoreTex and the desert boots are like tennis shoes – great but I still love my old leathers. These are really good and come in many widths for a real good fit.

im going to hike in mt. washington soon. if theres alot of snow im going to use my sapogi boots with thick wool socks.
also, comparing a knockoff to goretex saying it doesnt work is silly. i wore my timberlines all winter, through slush and snow for 12 hours skirmishing. my feet were dry. it breathes better than leather ill tell you that!

Superfeet!!! Oh man …
Superfeet!!! Oh man, those dramatically lowered my foot and leg injuries in both running and hiking.
Word of caution though I have heard people that had never used them before buying them and then walking around the entire next day and getting back and leg pain and returning them.
You have to get used to them. When I first got mine I would put them in for an hour the first day then switch back to my old inserts, and incrementally increasing that time each day until I could go the entire day.

mrbeligos, personally I would stay well away from any cotton in hiking socks. go with super thin synthetic liners and the then good wool/sythetic hiking socks (like Thorlo or Wigwam etc).
Cotton is a disaster once it gets wet.

Yet agian great series, that strengthening the ankle thing is no joke, for the past 5-6 years i have worn nothing but above the ankle boots,summer winter it didn’t matter. Ocasionally I will wear a pair of my old tennis shoes, and each time I do I will always not matter what twist my ankle(ouch). Oh for now I’m using some irishsetter boots they were 180$ got em for 90. To date the best boots i have ever owned with 800 thinsulate.Cool in summer warm in winter.Keep the great videos coming!

Nice series on hiking boots.
On your comment about mailordering Superfeet; I would advise against it. There are a lot of stores in Europe (and elsewhere) where they sell Superfeet and, like hiking boots, you really need good advise and help getting the right ones for you. The wrong one will probably do more harm than good.

I think GoreTex is more senceful for mid
heavy trekking shoes which are often used in urban surroundings, they are light, protect against rain and puddles, don´t need much maintenance effort and have often a more civil design…

Never liked waterproof boots – if you going to get them because you know your feet are going to get wet then chances are waters going to get in. Then you have the problem that no water is going to get out.

your socks should be the method of wicking away the moisture in boots(thick cotton and wool)hermon survivors are winter boots made to be waterproof and dont breathe.if done the right way you dont have to remove your boots due to moisture,and you dont have to wear gators.
