I totally agree with 203 and Chris. Get to a store with a lot of selection and try them out. It is even better if there is somebody there that can REALLY help you – not just a clerk. Where the boots around the store for several minutes.
In addition to being comfy, make sure there is plenty of room for your foot to swell, which it will do when you’re hiking. Also make sure there is a lot of room around your toes.
Finally, it is best if you have an option to return the boots. I REALLY wanted to like the Merrells because of the ventilation. I did everything that I just suggested, but I soon discovered, after wearing the boots around the office all day, that they were hurting my feet. Since I bought the boots at REI, I was able to take them back and try again. The next pair I got were perfect for me!
I don’t like to return things I buy, and I don’t want to sound like an REI commercial, but I DO think that is a good policy.
